Wangari Maathai (1940-2011) founded the Green Belt Movement (greenbeltmovement.org), a national movement in Kenya to replenish the land and to empower communities through planting trees.
She was the first woman to graduate with a doctorate degree in East and Central Africa and the first woman to chair the Department of Veterinary Anatomy (1976) & to be an associate professor (1977) at the University of Nairobi.
Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for sustainable development, democracy and peace.
